On this passage you will experience true offshore sailing combined with the dramatic beauty of the Irish and Scottish coastlines. We also plan to transit the spectacular Caledonian Canal.
We gather on August 4 in Cowes. The Fastnet Race will just have finished and Cowes Week will be underway, giving you the opportunity to see outstanding yachts and world-class racing at close quarters.
During our first day together we will get to know each other and the boat. We will discuss the route as a team, complete provisioning, and conduct a thorough safety briefing. Then we will depart Cowes, sail out through the famous Solent, round the iconic Needles, and head west. Following the English south coast, we aim for the Isles of Scilly, just off Land’s End.

From there, the plan is to continue north along Ireland’s west coast, making selected stops that we decide on together depending on weather and timing. Shortly after departure we will pass the legendary Fastnet Rock.
Along the west coast of Ireland there are many fascinating destinations, including Castletownbere, Dingle, the Aran Islands, Galway, Inishbofin and Tory Island. We will not visit them all, but we will explore a few highlights along the way.
While in the Isles of Scilly we will carefully review the weather forecast and decide whether conditions allow us to continue with our main plan of rounding Ireland via the Atlantic west coast. If the weather does not permit, we will instead take the inshore route and explore Ireland’s east coast. Possible stops could include Dublin, the Isle of Man, Belfast, and Campbeltown in Scotland, home to the renowned Springbank distillery.
conditions.
Whether we sail west or east of Ireland, our aim is to reach Port Ellen on Islay, an island famous for its nine well-known whisky distilleries. On our way towards Fort William and the entrance to the Caledonian Canal, we may stop at Jura, Oban, or the charming harbour town of Tobermory.

The Caledonian Canal offers some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery. We will transit Loch Lochy and the legendary Loch Ness before exiting the canal at Inverness. From there, a 500-nautical-mile offshore passage across the North Sea and Skagerrak awaits before we reach our final destination, Ellös, on Sweden’s west coast. The crossing will take approximately three days, and depending on conditions we may include a stop along the Norwegian coast.
